Meet Lily!
Lily is a RMHx Paso mare, 3 years old and has been in training with me since late August. Lily is a special training case because she wasn't socialized much with other horses for about a year and a half, which took us back quite a few steps.
Lily is reactive, explosive, temperamental, and above all else she was terrified. It took us several weeks for Lily to learn that not only she was a horse, but what a herd was. For the first 45 days Lily was just learning where her place was in the herd while figuring out how to interact with me. A horse like Lily doesn't do well under a lot of pressure so I gave her space and time.
The key to a horse like Lily who can be hot and reactive with little to no pressure is consistency, patience and do NOT let your emotions seep into your training. Keep count, reward for the slightest try, BUILD THEIR CONFIDENCE! Yes it will take longer, no you won't be on in 30 days (unless you want to traumatize them) but in the end you will have a reliable and willing partner.
Another tip, Lily constantly regresses so we have to start from step 1 every single session somedays it only takes a few minutes to go through the motions other days it feels like we are starting the process all over again- stick with it. Pamper them before or after your session, a grooming routine offers more than you know.
